Taxing Electric Vehicles

Taxing Electric Vehicles

The New South Wales, South Australian and Victoria governments have announced a tax on electric vehicles to be rolled out next year. This is an unfortunate development that will discourage people from buying electric vehicles, when we need to be increasing our electric vehicle uptake!

In Noosa, transport is a major part of our emissions in Noosa, so it is important that we support initiatives that encourage EV uptake. Luckily, Queensland is currently supporting our electric vehicle market and we commend the current direction of policy.

The EV tax is not the correct approach because it will discourage people from buying EV when the market is only just emerging.

— Queensland’s Transport Minister, Mark Bailey

Queensland is currently following the example of the ACT and rolling out exciting initiatives to encourage EV uptake. For example, the Queensland government is establishing an ‘electric highway’ of fast-charging stations for electric vehicles along our coast and across the State. Currently there are EV charging stations from Brisbane to Cairns and others planned. We look forward to seeing more charging stations across our State in 2021 and in Noosa!
