Support the Local Power Plan initiative

A community Plan

The Plan will assist regional communities around Australia by providing funding and technical assistance for communities to implement their own renewable energy projects, in their own communities. Renewable energy is a great opportunity to boost regional economies throughout Australia.

The Plan has been developed through a community co-design process by Helen Haines, Independent MP for Indi, her staff and communities with renewable energy projects across Australia.

ZEN Involvement

ZEN Inc. was invited to be one of 3 communities around Australia to speak briefly at the launch of the Plan, about how it will help us achieve our goals. This was the result of us making a submission to the Plan.

However, first the Plan needs to be passed by the Federal Government so the financial and technical assistance can be provided to communities wanting to implement their own renewable energy projects.

3 ways YOU can assist in getting the Plan passed by the Federal Parliament include:
* Writing to our local federal MP Llew O’Brien letting him know why he should support the Plan
* Sharing the website & the Plan
* Promoting it on social media.

The Local Power Plan proposes the creation of a new Australian Local Power Agency to deliver three innovative schemes:

  • The Local Power Scheme will establish 50 hubs in regional centres across Australia and a new $310 million fund to support local communities to develop their own energy projects;

  • The Underwriting New Community Investment Scheme will provide financial certainty to community-owned renewables projects, unlocking a new wave of locally-owned power stations;

  • The Community Renewable Investment Scheme will enable local people to purchase 20% of the value of new large-scale renewables projects, meaning the benefits will flow to local people.

  • In Australia, we are facing some of our toughest economic conditions ever. The time is right to make transformational investments in Australia, and especially in regional Australia.

By bringing cheap, clean power to the regions, spurring a new wave of local employment, and creating new sources of income that will last for decades, the Local Power Plan is one opportunity to reboot our regional economy.

— To make this a reality, we need the Government to commit $483 million over 10 years.
